Introduction

The department of biochemistry is among the premier department of Government Medical College, Bhandara started with the inception of the institute. Biochemistry is taught to medical students during 1st year of their MBBS curriculum to make them understand the scientific basis of the life processes at the molecular level and to orient them towards the application of the knowledge acquired in solving clinical problems.

The knowledge acquired in biochemistry helps the students to integrate molecular events with structure and function of the human body in health and disease.

Biochemical investigations are routinely useful for diagnosis as well as evaluating the course of diseases and also in research.

Mission
  • The mission of department of biochemistry is to carry out scientific research and evidence based teaching.
  • To train and teach undergraduate medical students the scientific basis of the life processes at the molecular level and to orient them towards the application of the knowledge acquired in solving clinical problems.
  • To promote the personal , professional development and communication skills among the students.
  • Make use of conventional techniques / instruments to perform biochemical analysis relevant to clinical screening and diagnosis.
  • Demonstrate the skills of solving scientific and clinical problems and decision making.
Vision
  1. Improving learning and education of biochemistry in integrative manner, in addition enhancement of and improvement of research activities.
  2. To train postgraduate students in teaching as well as laboratory technology.
  3. To make use of various techniques / instruments to perform biochemical analysis relevant to clinical screening and diagnosis.
  4. To make use of clinical biochemistry skills of solving scientific and clinical problems and decision making.
  5. To set up endocrine lab in future as well as starting diagnostic tumor markers for diagnosis of cancer.
Functions & objectives.
  1. The main objective in learning Biochemistry is to help the students to integrate molecular biochemical event with structure & function of the human body in health & disease.
  2. Participation in a culture of collective responsibility for the quality and conduct of undergraduate as well as postgraduate training programme.
  3. To teach and conduct examination and research for undergraduate as well as postgraduate in Biochemistry.
  4. To make use of various techniques / instruments to perform biochemical analysis relevant to clinical screening and diagnosis.
  5. Biochemistry department of GMC, Akola has three unique domains. They are academics, research and patients care. The academic aspect is that every year it involved in training of 150 MBBS students and also training of BPMT and PGDMLT students. Students are actively encouraged to do short term students research project funded by ICMR , which enables them to have research publications and make them eligible for future international and national research and other academic opportunities. All staff members are actively involved in academics, research and patients care.
  6. Biochemistry department also has well equipped clinical biochemical laboratory along with different emergency laboratory which is working 24 hourly.
  7. Biochemistry department also has special investigation lab which carried out special investigations like thyroid profile as a part of " Janani Shishu Suraksha Yojana" and serum ferritin, serum vitamin B12 estimation as a part of " National Sickel Cell Project" by ELISA method.
  8. We also participate in various national projects by performing various biochemical tests.
